A Hill Country weekend out of Austin fits inside a single charge on any current electric Cadillac, and the deciding factor is not range — it is what you are carrying and whether you are towing. A round trip to Fredericksburg, a day at Marble Falls or a loop through Wimberley and Dripping Springs all sit comfortably under 200 miles, and the shortest-legged Cadillac EV on sale is rated at 278. Nobody in this region needs to plan a charging stop for a Saturday.

The Demands

WHAT A HILL COUNTRY WEEKEND ACTUALLY ASKS OF A CAR

Range, but less than you think. Austin to Fredericksburg and back is roughly 160 miles. Marble Falls and back is closer to 100. Add local driving at the far end and you are still comfortably inside 200. Every current Cadillac EV clears that on one charge, with margin for the air conditioning working hard in July.

Highway efficiency, not city efficiency. This is the part that surprises people moving from petrol. On an electric vehicle the highway figure is the LOWER of the two EPA numbers, because steady speed gives regenerative braking nothing to recover. The run west on US 290 is nearly all highway, so plan against the highway rating rather than the combined one and the car will beat your expectation rather than miss it.

Heat, which is the real local variable. Five months of Texas summer means the air conditioning runs constantly. The fix is pre-conditioning the cabin while the car is still plugged in at home: cool it on the wall and you leave with a cold interior and a full battery, instead of spending range on the first twenty minutes.

Six inches of ground clearance, and what it means. Every Cadillac EV here is a paved-road vehicle. Caliche ranch tracks after rain and low-water crossings are not on the menu — and a low-water crossing is not something to attempt in any vehicle, electric or otherwise.

THE THREE CADILLAC EVS, AND WHAT EACH ONE BRINGS

Cadillac OPTIQ — the default answer

317 miles rated in rear-wheel drive, 26 cubic feet of cargo behind the second row and 57 with the seats folded, and 1,500 lbs of towing properly equipped. From $50,900 before a $1,795 destination charge, with the 33-inch display, 19-speaker AKG audio and standard Super Cruise on every trim. Cadillac OPTIQ-V — the one for the road, not the load

519 horsepower, 3.5 seconds to sixty, adaptive dampers and Brembo front brakes, from $67,500. Rated at 278 miles, still comfortably enough for the weekend. The catch for this particular use: it carries no tow rating at all, and its 21-inch wheels are the least suited of the three to a gravel car park. Cadillac LYRIQ — the one for four adults and a trailer. 326 miles rated, 28 and 60.8 cubic feet of cargo, and 3,500 lbs of towing. It is 196.7 inches long on a 121.8-inch wheelbase, so the extra room lands in the back seat where it is felt on a two-hour drive. Local Detail

WHAT THIS LOOKS LIKE ON THE ACTUAL ROADS

Heading west, US 290 through Dripping Springs is the workhorse route and it is where the highway efficiency figure does the most work. RM 2244 and the climbs around Barton Creek are the enjoyable part, and the surface changes often enough that adaptive damping is genuinely noticeable rather than a talking point. Coming back into town, RM 620 along the lake is the scenic option and the slow one.

On charging: with a native NACS port every current Cadillac EV plugs straight into a Tesla Supercharger without an adapter, so the network out here is not a constraint the way it was three years ago. WHICH ONE SHOULD YOU TAKE?

For most Austin buyers the answer is the OPTIQ, and the reason is not range — it is that nothing headline is missing from the entry car. The $50,900 Luxury has the same screen, the same nineteen speakers and the same hands-free Super Cruise as the $67,500 V.
